I haven’t had a chance to get any posts done this week because Miley and I have been working on a special project. When we started this project, we thought it would be an easy, quick, simple one… but there wasn’t one thing easy, quick or simple about it. We decided to make a video of a tour of our place to share with all of you. Sounds easy, right? Well… let’s just say it was way more time consuming and complicated than I thought it would be. But then you have to take into consideration, I’m not a very techy person, so maybe it is easy, just not for the technically challenged person like me. Either way, we managed to get it recorded, edited and finally uploaded.
Now that it’s uploaded, the frustration is gone and I now know what to do, Miley and I decided it might be fun to make videos to share here on occasion. If you enjoyed the video and would like to see more, be sure to like the video and subscribe to our YouTube channel.

No Rest, All Play!
Last Saturday was so beautiful! It was sunny, warm, very little wind… just perfect! It was one of those days where you wanted to just spend the entire day outside just resting, relaxing and soaking up the sun. Of course, around here, there’s always something to do or something that needs to be done that it’s hard to go outside and just do nothing. And Saturday was definitely one of those days! We all headed out with plans of just sitting but we found plenty of things to do to keep us busy…
Mysterious Funk
With all the endless projects we’ve got going on around here, there’s times when our house can become over taken with funk. Sometimes that funk can be mysterious and we have no idea what it’s from; other times it can be pretty obvious and easy to remedy. Like recently for example, we had the baby chicks in a brooder with a heat lamp in the house. For the first week it’s fine; they’re small, don’t eat that much and their brooder can be changed every few days without becoming too smelly. Then once they reach a week old, things start getting a little stinkier, to where the litter needs to be changed once a day. Then, with each day that goes by, they grow bigger, eat more, poop more and by the end of the week… wowzers… no matter how many times a day you change the litter, there’s that never ending, lingering little chick funk. At that point, it’s a sign that the chicks should have been moved out of the house like 5 days ago.
5 Steps to Care for Chicks That Arrive by Mail
Getting the mail is usually pretty boring around here… ya know it’s just the usual same ole thing, bills, junk mail and more bills. So when something else comes in the mail, like a box full of baby chicks, things get pretty exciting!

First Chicks of the Season
Several weeks ago Brooke got out the incubator and prepared to fill it with the first batch of eggs for the year. Trying to gather enough eggs was a little slow going at first. The weather was super cold during that time, so it was very tricky trying to get the eggs before they got too cold. Brooke would run out to the coop every half an hour starting in the morning until early afternoon, or until the eggs were gathered. At the time her group of chickens, which has 5 in the group, were only averaging two eggs a day. Between the chickens not laying any some days to the eggs getting too cold by the time she got to them, it took her a week to get nine eggs. Out of those eggs there were a few that were questionable on being too cold, but she decided to go ahead and use them.

Found an Egg How?
Oh, those chickens, they just love to hide their eggs. It feels like we’re always celebrating Easter because each evening when we gather eggs we always have to go on a big egg hunt. Lately one of the hens’ favorite spots to hide their eggs has been in the large bale of hay we use to feed the goats. Since the bale is in the other side of the barn opposite where the chickens live, I always wait until morning to gather the eggs from there. When its dark out and the howling coyotes sound like they’re in the field right next to us, the last thing I want to do is take time and go over to the dark, creepy side of the barn and dig through the hay with a flashlight looking for eggs. It’s creepy for sure!

Ready for Winter… or not!
Well, I think winter had officially arrived. The wind is howling and it’s cold out… actually very cold out. We knew this yucky weather was coming so we spent the weekend getting some things done that needed to get done. Luckily we had beautiful, perfect weather over the weekend to do all those things.

How to Catch a Chicken
Catching chickens can be pretty tricky. They’re quick, and once they get the sense you’re after them, they make sure to keep their distance and run even quicker. But, with a special tool and some quickness they can be caught. Miley thought it would be a good topic to post about, so she volunteered to demonstrate the best technique on how to catch one.
