A Day in Our Life

The weather has been like a rollercoaster lately. Just week before last we had beautiful weather and even ventured out for a walk, then last week it got really cold and we had a dreary day or two, then this week its back to being even more beautiful than it was a couple weeks ago. I guess that’s just Kansas weather for ya.

Every day is a little different for us on our homestead. Some days are pretty easy going, not much going on and others are busy, busy, busy. During the winter we usually have a lot more down time than any other time of the year.

Lovely Weather

The weather has been so lovely lately. We’ve had mild temperatures, no wind and sunshine… it’s the perfect winter weather. With the exception of the ice storm around Thanksgiving when we were out of electricity for a day, and a few other short cold spells, this winter has been perfect so far… knocking on wood that it stays that way!

Since it’s been so nice we decided we’d better take advantage of it and do some much needed cleaning of the chicken coops. Cleaning coops isn’t one of the most fun jobs, and then combine it with cold weather; it’s one of those things that doesn’t get done very often in the winter.

Two Surprises in one Day!

We spent the weekend preparing for a winter storm that was supposed to bring lots of snow, wind and blizzard conditions. It’s something that we always dread when winter hits, mostly because it makes doing chores an even bigger chore when there’s a ton of snow to deal with. Our winter had started out so mild in the beginning that I was really holding out hope that it would continue to be that way until spring. But no such luck.

On Saturday afternoon, we all took some time to put out extra bedding for the animals, fill feeders, and get deicers installed and running. We also made a wood pile close to the house where we’d have easy access to it and tarped it. With everyone pitching it, it really didn’t take long at all to get ready… or I guess I should say prepared because we’re never ready for snow!

Making Memories

The Christmas season is a special time that’s filled with love, peace and happiness. Yes, it really is. But the behind the scenes of it… well, that’s a whole nother story. I don’t know about you, but I know for me, it’s so easy to get wrapped up in all the work involved in getting ready for Christmas that I sometimes forget to relax and have fun too. All the extra activities and parties, shopping, extra cooking and baking on top of all the regular stuff that has to be done every day can leave very little time to just sit down, relax and enjoy the special moments.

Those special moments are the things you don’t want to miss out on

because those special moments are the key to the memories we hold in our hearts.

New Stuff Coming Soon

In my last blog post, I told you about our new Humble Little Homestead You Tube channel where we will be sharing the latest happenings and projects going on around here. As I’ve been working on that, I got to thinking about exactly what all I wanted to share on that channel. I intend on it being mostly homesteading related and plan to cover everything from gardening tips and updates to animal care and processing, plus everything in between, in addition to showing our progress on fixing up the place.

As I was making videos I realized some of our videos were starting to be more about the kids doing every day projects and having fun which kind of ventured away from my intended topic. So we’ve decided to make another You Tube channel called Humble Little Homestead for Kids! Continue reading

It’s Just Poop!

Oh, night time chores! Yeah, they actually live up to their name because they can be well… quite a chore to have to do. It’s not that it’s really hard work or anything; we just basically have to go out, gather eggs, and close up the coops. Sounds pretty easy, right? Well, it is except that we have to go out after dark because there’s a small group of chickens that like to stay out until the last possible second before the sun sets. It’s just kinda creepy, especially being out in the country, to have to go out in the dark. We just really don’t know what kind of critters might be lurking in the dark shadows.

Back From a Break

Well, as you can tell, I took a little break from here. It wasn’t an intentional break, it just kinda happened. Things got busy, life happened, and before I knew it days had passed by before I even had a chance to finish a sentence, let alone a whole post. It’s been one of those crazy summers where no matter how hard I work it just seems like I can’t get ahead. We’ve had some big changes happen with my son moving out and my older daughter working more hours. With them both not around as much and not being able to help out with chores like they used to, we’ve had to make some adjustments and get into a new routine. It’s been a fun, exciting, yet challenging time as we start this new chapter of our life.

Fun Time at the Fair

Well, the fair is over and done for another year. Right now we are all in this dazed; don’t know what to do with ourselves mode, which is pretty much the norm for us after the fair. We spend so much time preparing, the kids put in lots of time and hard work on all their projects, the fair comes… there is a blur of business, craziness and fun all wrapped up together… then it’s over. It always takes us about a week to get rested up and back into a routine of normalness again. It was all so much fun, we all had a great time, learned a lot, and made lots of great memories.

Prepping for the Fair

Fair time is always a fun and exciting time for us. After spending the year working on their projects, the kids can finally show off all their hard work. This year is my oldest daughter’s last year and my youngest daughters first year, so it’s a happy yet kinda sad time mixed all into one. Speaking of happy yet sad all mixed together, my oldest recently found an apartment and is moving out. He’s got a great job, we’re so proud of him and he’s so ready to start a life of his own… but wow, I just don’t know if Mom and Dad are quite ready for this. I guess it’s one of those things we’re never quite ready for… it just happens and we somehow get through it. So he’s moving and we’re getting last minute projects… or more like the majority of the projects, since we tend to procrastinate, ready for the fair. So it’s a busy time right now… real busy. But busy is good because it keeps my mind occupied and makes it easier to ease into all these new changes. Time sure does fly. Speaking of time flying, Michael and I recently had our 25th anniversary. We haven’t had a chance to celebrate that yet, due to our busy schedules, but we’re hoping to at least sneak in a dinner together in all this craziness. Where does the time go?
