One GOAT of A Day!

Goats… where do I begin? They’re cute. They’re entertaining. They’re fun and they make good pets, especially for kids. I do love them. But let me tell you, they’re very good at testing people’s patience, especially mine.

Back before we got goats, I remember asking my husband if we could get a couple. Right off the bat he said no. I asked him why and he said that goats were nothing but trouble and pains in the you-know-what. I didn’t believe him; I mean how could any thing this adorable….

be such a pain? Just look at that cute little face, right? Continue reading

Tour of Our Little Homestead

I haven’t had a chance to get any posts done this week because Miley and I have been working on a special project. When we started this project, we thought it would be an easy, quick, simple one… but there wasn’t one thing easy, quick or simple about it. We decided to make a video of a tour of our place to share with all of you. Sounds easy, right? Well… let’s just say it was way more time consuming and complicated than I thought it would be. But then you have to take into consideration, I’m not a very techy person, so maybe it is easy, just not for the technically challenged person like me. Either way, we managed to get it recorded, edited and finally uploaded.

Now that it’s uploaded, the frustration is gone and I now know what to do, Miley and I decided it might be fun to make videos to share here on occasion. If you enjoyed the video and would like to see more, be sure to like the video and subscribe to our YouTube channel.

All Work, No Play, No Fun!

Last weekend sure made up for the weekend before last that was full of fun and play. Yeah, last weekend was full of work, more work, and well… lots of work. It was all worth it in the end though because we really did get a lot accomplished.

Saturday we spent the entire day bringing in compost and dirt to build up the beds. What started out being a small project of just adding a little compost over all the beds, turned into an unexpectedly larger project. Of course Michael was giving me a hard time about coming up with such a large project and making him work so hard, but…

No Rest, All Play!

Last Saturday was so beautiful! It was sunny, warm, very little wind… just perfect! It was one of those days where you wanted to just spend the entire day outside just resting, relaxing and soaking up the sun. Of course, around here, there’s always something to do or something that needs to be done that it’s hard to go outside and just do nothing. And Saturday was definitely one of those days! We all headed out with plans of just sitting but we found plenty of things to do to keep us busy…

Last Kid Has Arrived!

I’m a little late sharing about this, but several days after Sugar had her kids, Nutmeg kidded out. Now kidding season is over for this year. Yay! This kidding season was really short lived because we only had two kidding, which made it pretty nice. Not that I don’t like kidding season, but it’s just a relief when all the kids are here, safe and sound, up and running and doing great.

Nutmeg only had one this year, which is a first. She’s always had twins all the other years we’ve had her. This time she had a little buckling…

The First Kids Have Arrived!

Well, Saturday night I thought for sure we’d wake up Sunday morning with some new kids in the barn. I got up early Sunday morning and saw there were no kids yet, so I let Sugar back out with the other goats. The rest of Sunday and all day Monday we checked… and we fretted… and we wondered… and we checked… and we paced… and we checked…. then we checked… and we…. well, you get the point. There were still no babies yet.

Feeding Animals and Keeping Costs Down

No matter how much you plan, or how frugal you try to be, most of the time it takes experience and trying things before you can actually learn what will or won’t work when it comes to keeping animal feeding costs as low as possible. Lowering costs is one area that’s become really important for us, especially since at this time, we mostly produce food for ourselves and don’t make an income on it. We do sell eggs and a little milk on occasion, but if we’re lucky we just break even, so that mostly just helps offset costs for feeding the chickens.

Downsizing for Winter

As we head into winter, we decided it was a good time to sit down, think about and reevaluate the last year. While we feel the year went pretty well, there are a few things we’d like to do differently. One of the biggest changes we’ve decided to make is decreasing the number of animals we keep through the winter. In the fall of last year we had the opportunity to get a really good deal on a couple of feeder pigs, so we got them. In addition to that, we increased our goat herd because we needed a buck for breeding and we added a few boer goats for 4H projects. All was fine until winter hit. It was a tough winter…. long periods of freezing temperatures with several big snowfalls made it difficult to care for them all. While we planned for our feed costs to be higher since the animals have to eat more to stay warm, it ended up being a lot higher than we expected it to be. So let’s just say… we’ve been eating some pretty expensive pork.

Not wanting to make those mistakes again, one of the first things we did was buy a feeder pig in the spring. That way, there’d be plenty of grass to graze and extra produce from the garden to give, in addition to the regular feed. We noticed a huge difference in feed costs between last winter and this summer. Piglet is all grown up now and will be headed to the butcher at the end of the week…
