Ice Storm Was Short Lived But Left Us Without Power

The first part of the ice storm arrived and it’s looking like it might not be as bad as it was predicted. The temps stayed a few degrees warmer than expected so that helped to not have so much accumulation.

We just thought we lucked out and made it through the storm without loosing power. Unfortunately, the rain picked up through the night, we ended up with more ice accumulation, and woke up to no power.

One day everything is covered in ice… the next day it’s gone! If we have to have ice storms, this is the way to have them. Our power is still off but the day is so beautiful that we don’t really notice the power being out.

Training Chickens to go to the Garden for Soaked Grain

Even though we don’t quite have our fence and coop ready to put the chickens in the garden yet, doesn’t mean we can’t go ahead and encourage the chickens to hang out in the garden as much as possible. I’m feeding them their soaked grain every morning in hopes it will make them want to spend more time in the garden. After our one really nice day, it turned really cold so we haven’t been able to do more in the garden. I decided to take advantage of having to be cooped up in the house by getting the Christmas tree taken down.

We’re Getting the Garden Ready for Chickens!

It was a beautiful, spring-like day so what better way to spend the day than out in the garden. We’re working to convert the garden over to no till. First we plan to add a nice thick layer of mulch over the entire garden then put the chickens in there to help work the mulch and break it down.
