Yes, It’s Been a While

Wow, it seems like for ever since I posted anything here. And you know, I’ve missed it. I didn’t intend to quit posting here, it just happened. As I’ve mentioned before, I started a YouTube channel. The reason I decided to start it is because I’ve found it hard to keep up with all that’s going on around here through blog posts. There just isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done. With videos, it makes it just a little bit easier because I can capture the content while we’re out working, then edit it and have it ready to post. Where posts seem to take more time because we go out and work, take pictures, edit the pictures, then I have to come in and write, then edit. If I focus on writing, I tend to fall behind on the work that needs to be done around here and if I focus on the work, I fall behind writing. Since I’m not much of a multitasker, I decided to focus on making videos for a while to see if it’d be something I’d like. It’s been great because I’m learning all sorts of new things and have met a lot of fun like-minded people.

A Day in Our Life

The weather has been like a rollercoaster lately. Just week before last we had beautiful weather and even ventured out for a walk, then last week it got really cold and we had a dreary day or two, then this week its back to being even more beautiful than it was a couple weeks ago. I guess that’s just Kansas weather for ya.

Every day is a little different for us on our homestead. Some days are pretty easy going, not much going on and others are busy, busy, busy. During the winter we usually have a lot more down time than any other time of the year.

Lovely Weather

The weather has been so lovely lately. We’ve had mild temperatures, no wind and sunshine… it’s the perfect winter weather. With the exception of the ice storm around Thanksgiving when we were out of electricity for a day, and a few other short cold spells, this winter has been perfect so far… knocking on wood that it stays that way!

Since it’s been so nice we decided we’d better take advantage of it and do some much needed cleaning of the chicken coops. Cleaning coops isn’t one of the most fun jobs, and then combine it with cold weather; it’s one of those things that doesn’t get done very often in the winter.

Two Surprises in one Day!

We spent the weekend preparing for a winter storm that was supposed to bring lots of snow, wind and blizzard conditions. It’s something that we always dread when winter hits, mostly because it makes doing chores an even bigger chore when there’s a ton of snow to deal with. Our winter had started out so mild in the beginning that I was really holding out hope that it would continue to be that way until spring. But no such luck.

On Saturday afternoon, we all took some time to put out extra bedding for the animals, fill feeders, and get deicers installed and running. We also made a wood pile close to the house where we’d have easy access to it and tarped it. With everyone pitching it, it really didn’t take long at all to get ready… or I guess I should say prepared because we’re never ready for snow!

Making Memories

The Christmas season is a special time that’s filled with love, peace and happiness. Yes, it really is. But the behind the scenes of it… well, that’s a whole nother story. I don’t know about you, but I know for me, it’s so easy to get wrapped up in all the work involved in getting ready for Christmas that I sometimes forget to relax and have fun too. All the extra activities and parties, shopping, extra cooking and baking on top of all the regular stuff that has to be done every day can leave very little time to just sit down, relax and enjoy the special moments.

Those special moments are the things you don’t want to miss out on

because those special moments are the key to the memories we hold in our hearts.

New Stuff Coming Soon

In my last blog post, I told you about our new Humble Little Homestead You Tube channel where we will be sharing the latest happenings and projects going on around here. As I’ve been working on that, I got to thinking about exactly what all I wanted to share on that channel. I intend on it being mostly homesteading related and plan to cover everything from gardening tips and updates to animal care and processing, plus everything in between, in addition to showing our progress on fixing up the place.

As I was making videos I realized some of our videos were starting to be more about the kids doing every day projects and having fun which kind of ventured away from my intended topic. So we’ve decided to make another You Tube channel called Humble Little Homestead for Kids! Continue reading

No New Posts, Here’s Why…

As you’ve probably noticed, things have been a little quite around here lately. It hasn’t been intentional, it’s just that things have been so busy that  I haven’t had enough time to post. I take pictures and jot down notes of all the latest happenings with intentions of getting them posted then… life happens, so I take more pictures and jot down notes, and pretty soon I have a whole pile of notes with pages being added every day because life keeps going no matter if I’m caught up or not.

So I’ve decided to start making videos of the latest happenings around here because I’ve found it to be a little easier to capture it all and get it posted in a timelier manner. I still plan on posting articles on here too, in fact I have quite a few planned out and hope to get them done soon.

For now if you’re interested you can check out my YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5t-Tv8XgiSXGhii0PR0ZhQ

Welcome to Our Homestead:

Curious what night time chores are like around here?

The Not so Fun Part of Homesteading

Butchering time.

It’s the hardest part of homesteading. We have such conflicting feelings over it. On one hand, we find it empowering to fill our freezer with meat that we’ve raised ourselves from start to finish. To know where our meat comes from, what all it’s been fed and to know that we can do it all ourselves is a really great feeling. On the other hand, it makes us a little sad. Even though we know from the beginning we are raising the animals for meat, we don’t name them, and tell ourselves we can’t get attached, well… we still do. It’s just hard not to get attached when you spend months taking care of them.

It’s Just Poop!

Oh, night time chores! Yeah, they actually live up to their name because they can be well… quite a chore to have to do. It’s not that it’s really hard work or anything; we just basically have to go out, gather eggs, and close up the coops. Sounds pretty easy, right? Well, it is except that we have to go out after dark because there’s a small group of chickens that like to stay out until the last possible second before the sun sets. It’s just kinda creepy, especially being out in the country, to have to go out in the dark. We just really don’t know what kind of critters might be lurking in the dark shadows.
