Yes, It’s Been a While

Wow, it seems like for ever since I posted anything here. And you know, I’ve missed it. I didn’t intend to quit posting here, it just happened. As I’ve mentioned before, I started a YouTube channel. The reason I decided to start it is because I’ve found it hard to keep up with all that’s going on around here through blog posts. There just isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done. With videos, it makes it just a little bit easier because I can capture the content while we’re out working, then edit it and have it ready to post. Where posts seem to take more time because we go out and work, take pictures, edit the pictures, then I have to come in and write, then edit. If I focus on writing, I tend to fall behind on the work that needs to be done around here and if I focus on the work, I fall behind writing. Since I’m not much of a multitasker, I decided to focus on making videos for a while to see if it’d be something I’d like. It’s been great because I’m learning all sorts of new things and have met a lot of fun like-minded people.

No New Posts, Here’s Why…

As you’ve probably noticed, things have been a little quite around here lately. It hasn’t been intentional, it’s just that things have been so busy that  I haven’t had enough time to post. I take pictures and jot down notes of all the latest happenings with intentions of getting them posted then… life happens, so I take more pictures and jot down notes, and pretty soon I have a whole pile of notes with pages being added every day because life keeps going no matter if I’m caught up or not.

So I’ve decided to start making videos of the latest happenings around here because I’ve found it to be a little easier to capture it all and get it posted in a timelier manner. I still plan on posting articles on here too, in fact I have quite a few planned out and hope to get them done soon.

Days May Be Getting Shorter, But Still Lots to Do!

I know it’s been a while since I last posted, but things have just been busy… there’s just not enough time in the day to get everything done. Normally at this time of the year, things start to wind down around here. The garden slows down, the goat dries up and milking comes to an end for the year, and we start planning when to butcher our turkeys and meat chickens. But this year has been so different and I’m beginning to wonder if we will get everything done by the time winter hits. I really hope so because I really don’t want to be out butchering birds when the snow is flying.

So far the only thing close to being on schedule is our milking season has come to an end. We milked the last time for this year last week and are using up our last quart…

Fall Garden Update

Shortly after my last garden update, we went out and cleared the weeds out of one end of the garden. It was quite a chore, let me tell ya! Those weeds were so thick and tall it made it really hard to knock down and on top of that, it was super-hot and humid. Not the best combination at all. I had break out the DR Trimmer because the weed eater kept loosing it’s string, then it also kept loosing it’s string and between that and me killing it and not being able to restart it, I was keeping my husband busy helping me when he had other things to get done.

Once all the weeds were knocked down, it was a huge chore to till because all the weeds kept bogging down the tiller. But we managed to get it all done and I got the beans in. Now they’re up, blooming and looking good. I also put in a row of peas but not all of them came up and the beans kinda took over. I keep forgetting to check so I don’t know if there are any growing out there or not.

Back From a Break

Well, as you can tell, I took a little break from here. It wasn’t an intentional break, it just kinda happened. Things got busy, life happened, and before I knew it days had passed by before I even had a chance to finish a sentence, let alone a whole post. It’s been one of those crazy summers where no matter how hard I work it just seems like I can’t get ahead. We’ve had some big changes happen with my son moving out and my older daughter working more hours. With them both not around as much and not being able to help out with chores like they used to, we’ve had to make some adjustments and get into a new routine. It’s been a fun, exciting, yet challenging time as we start this new chapter of our life.

July Garden Update

It’s getting to be that time where the garden’s finally starting to produce a lot. We’re in that in between stage where we get too much to keep up with eating it, but yet not quite enough to make it worth getting the canner out. There are a few things we’ve gotten a lot of, like cucumbers for example, that I probably could have made made and canned some pickles with. Instead of canning, I’ve been fermenting them and making refrigerator pickles. Next week is the fair, and we’ve been busy getting ready for that, so I just haven’t had enough time to do it. I’m hoping after the fair there will still be plenty of cucumbers to can some pickles. If not, I’ll just plant a fall crop and hope to get more in a few months. The tomatoes are also really starting to ripen. There is a lot out there, so I’m just holding my breath that most of them won’t start turning until after the fair. I really wish there was a magical button I could push to pause the garden until after the fair.

June Garden Update

Here it is July already and I’m just now getting around to doing an update on what all has been happening in my garden in June. Oh well, better late than never, right?

When I started out the year, I had two goals I wanted to work towards. My first goal was to have a neater garden. I’ve always dreamed of having one that’s more appealing to the eyes, you know… with neat little walk ways and flowers growing, bees buzzing and butterflies fluttering around. One that when you walk into it, gives you a calm, relaxed feeling…

Companion Planting

Over the years that I’ve had a garden, I haven’t ever been that interested in companion planting. I’ve always liked everything to have its own space in neat little rows, or semi-neat crooked rows in my case. Planting certain plants together to benefit each other never really crossed my mind, up until last year. I was having problems with bugs invading some crops in my garden so I started researching organic ways to control them and ran across an article on companion planting. I found it really interesting and wanted to try it to see if it would really work. Since I had already planted my garden, I mostly focused on planting various flowers and herbs that would help to control the bugs. The kids really got into it and had so much fun buying different herbs and flowers and then researching too find the best companions to plant them next to.

Rainy Day in the Garden

Last Saturday we had all these big plans to get a lot of stuff done outside… but then it rained, and you know what happens sometimes when it rains… it pours. And poured, it did… literally. While the rain was nice and much needed, it wasn’t so nice when it came to getting stuff done outside. So instead my husband and I went to town and ran a few errands. On our way home we decided to stop by the local green house, Mulberry Lane, which is only several miles from where we live. If you’re local, I highly recommend stopping by there, they have a great selection and are so helpful! They were running a special on their cooler weather plants, and since the lettuce is growing so well in my garden, I decided to get more. Well, we can’t ever stop in there for just one thing, so we ended up leaving with a lot more than just lettuce….
