Everyone has those days… you know, the ones where as soon as you wake up nothing goes right. I think animals can even sometimes have those days. In fact, one day Neville was having a horrible start to his day and boy, did he have a lot to say about it…
Well fair week has officially begun. Unfortunately for us it’s not gotten off to a very good start. Yesterday was hand pet judging day and Miley woke up sick so we weren’t able to make it. She was very disappointed because she’d worked hard on her speech and story about her cat. Since she was unable to share it at the fair we decided to share it here.
Got up early to get garden work done, and help Miley break the goats to lead for the fair, so we could get it all done before it turned hot. Later in the afternoon I watered the corn and had sprinkler problems which resulted in a couple of flooded rows of corn. I wasn’t thinking and as I went to get the hose off the sprinkler, I waded through deep mud and lost my flop flops. Well… that turned into a big mess. It was just one of those days… never a dull moment.
In this video I show you how we use raw milk in the garden. From what I’ve read, raw milk can help with blossom end rot which is caused by low calcium. It’s also a good fertilizer and works to help repel insects. I’ve been using it for several years now and have had good results with it. To read more about it, click here.

Some times ya just gotta do nothing much but hang out and enjoy life…
I like to spray my garden with neem oil on a regular basis to prevent fungus and insect problems. In this video I show how I use it.
After making sauerkraut we still had a lot of cabbage to use up so I made some bierocks. The kids decided to get the sewing machine out. It had been a while since Brooke did any sewing so she made a pillow to brush up on her skills.
This year I’m spraying the garden with several different things to help prevent fungus and disease. On this day I used Actinovate, which is an organic fungicide that helps to prevent and cure a wide range of diseases that affect plants.
As I was spraying I discovered that my tomatoes look like they may be starting to be affected by some sort of disease. It doesn’t help that we’ve had some big rains lately, then on top of that, when ever it does finally dry out and I do water, we end up with another big down pour the next day. I’m sure that the inconsistent amount of water they’ve gotten has been pretty hard on them.
Last year this spray did wonders for my plants, just hoping it will work that well this year. I believe I really need to consider crop rotation for next year.
Most garden pests I can deal with but when it comes to worms… now that’s an emergency and a good reason to get out the pesticide I try to avoid using.
My little experiment I’m trying where I used 3 different methods to plant potatoes is turning out quite interesting. I thought the potatoes in the pots weren’t doing so good because I forgot to give them extra water. Surprisingly, more grew than I expected. The potatoes that we planted on top of the ground and covered with hay grew some really nice sized potatoes. We have yet to see how well the potatoes we planted in the ground did. We plan to dig them soon so we’ll find out.
The first weekend in July is always a busy one for us. Between celebrating Miley’s birthday and celebrating the 4th, it’s always a fun time for all of us to get together. Swimming, wiener roasts, birthday cake, and the largest water balloon fight ever… it’s nothing fancy, just good old fashioned fun!
