We got the last of our alfalfa cut, baled and put up for winter. It’s a relief to have that done. We had a rooster get tangled in some string, so we had to chase him down and free him, then we spent a good part of the day getting chicken broth canned.

Sick Chicks and A Fancy Bird Nest
Sick chicks… a fancy bird nest… chicken broth started… marshmallows done… filled the dehydrator with peppers… it was a day full of work and fun.
Our Broody Hen Hatched Guinea Keets
We had a fun surprise in the barn when we went out to do chores. The nest of guinea eggs that our hen has been faithfully sitting on for the last several weeks finally started hatching. We ended up with 5 baby keets. Since they hatched, we had to move the the meat chicks into the coop so that we could use the tote for the keets. We didn’t plan for it to take all that long but it kept us busy for most of the afternoon.
Labor Day, Chicks and More Chicks!
Had a fun labor day weekend but it was so windy out that we weren’t able to do much outside. We got our fall meat birds and now the guinea keets are hatching, so we’re having to figure out where to put them all.
Milk Room Complete, Mole Trouble and Making Cake
We got our milk room enclosure done and it’s so nice. Just when we get that problem fixed, we have another. Moles have started taking over the garden so now we’re trying to figure out a good way to get rid of them.
We have a bunch of zucchini so we’re shredding it up to freeze and making chocolate zucchini cake. If you’d like the recipe, you can find it here.
Venturing Out Of Our Comfort Zone
It was another busy day on the homestead. Between a turkey getting injured, to way too spicy enchiladas for supper, to breaking out of the ole’ comfort zone in the tomato patch, there’s never a dull moment around here.
We Had A Turd Floater… Quite Literally
It was one of those days… tons of rain, in fact we got a turd floater, quite literally. Lightening fried our internet modem so we had to get that replaced.. But on a brighter note, I got lots of canning done, got my fall cucumbers in, plus we made time for a little fun.
Pulling Cucumbers and Skipping Rocks
Just another day on the homestead… all the usual chores, got cucumber plants pulled and the bed ready for replanting. Summer time is passing quickly so we made sure to get in some swimming and enjoy the evening with a walk to the creek.
Moved Turkeys To the Coop
It was long over due, we finally cleaned out the coop and moved the turkeys out of the house. I think they’re happy to finally have more room to run around.
It was actually a fun day of work. Work doesn’t really seem like work when you have a little helper that provides good conversation. 😉
Fermented Pickles Ready, Swimming and Games
It was a busy day with all the usual chores and garden work. The fermented pickles were ready so I got those packed into new jars and ready for the fridge.
Once all the work was done we made time for a little play and fun too.
